Let Them Eat Cake
It’s the milling crowds and camera flashes that you notice first, as scores of people queue up to get a look at the fabulous display on offer. An art gallery, you might reasonably think. Or maybe it’s some mega-celebs and their entourage that are causing such a scrum? In fact, it’s simply a selection of seriously good-looking cakes that have stopped shoppers in their tracks and prompted many to whip out their cameras to capture the confectionary-clad treats in all their glory.
The best cupcakes in Britain have landed in the South Hall of the Market Building as a brand new Candy Cakes store opens its doors. Say goodbye to those bland muffins from interchangeable coffee shop chains and say hello to brightly coloured and super tasty treats that’ll take at least two of you to finish.
Visitors can enjoy the full range of ‘pret-a-cupcakes’ in the new store, including flavours such as Spider Lovin’, Strawberry Sundae, Techno Mouse, Alphabet City and the Chocolate Flyer
You could also sample the apple, topped with yellow icing and cinnamon, the blueberry cheesecake, with blueberry-flavoured icing and a hunk of creamy cheesecake in the middle, or the lemon, which has a crystalised lemon slice popped on the top. This month, there’s also several spooky cakes with a Halloween theme, decorated with skulls, gummy skeletons and all manner of fearfully fabulous frosting. Amazingly, given the pop-art-style bright colours of the toppings, each individual Candy Cake is made from natural ingredients – with no artificial colourings, preservatives or additives used in the manufacturing process. There’s also a range that is GM free and gluten free and options for reduced fat and low sugar content cakes, too.
These visually stunning treats are also a hit with celebs, with several boxes being ordered by Madonna for her fiftieth birthday earlier this year. And, as any style-conscious type knows, Madge is always right on trend – Candy Cakes are clearly the confectionary du jour.
