Although beloved of iconic designers such as Phillipe Starck (who names it as his favourite restaurant) and movie stars such as Keira Knightley and Jude Law, J Sheekey’s true star quality has always been because of its food.
The West End’s most famous fish restaurant, situated just a stone’s throw from Covent Garden’s Piazza, combines an unstuffy atmosphere with some of the most fabulous seafood currently served in the capital.
The 2009 opening of their Oyster Bar, situated next door to the main restaurant, gave diners an even better chance of securing a much-coveted booking at this perennially popular spot. Offering all-day dining around an elegant horseshoe-shaped central bar, the kitchen turns out everything from simple, fresh-off-the-boat seafood platters to sautéed octopus and, of course, its justifiably famous selection of oysters.
The room itself has a comfortable, clubby feel, echoing the décor of its sister restaurant next door; its wood-panelled walls lined with Alison Jackson’s photographs of 21st century theatrical luminaries, from John Hurt and Eileen Atkins to Orlando Bloom and Rosamund Pike.
Chic, buzzing and utterly convivial, J Sheekey’s sterling reputation is well deserved, with Harden’s restaurant guide describing it as “the perfect place to go for a glass of bubbly and some oysters.”
