BFI share their fascinating archive footage of Covent Garden
To celebrate the 180th anniversary of the Market Building and the 75th anniversary of the British Film Institute National Archive, the BFI are showcasing the Covent Garden documentary ‘Every Day Except Christmas’ in Market Building.
The changing face of Covent Garden can be seen in this fascinating archive
footage, supplied by the BFI, and displayed in the
store window of 11 The Market Building. Entitled ‘Every Day Except
Christmas’, this award-winning Lindsay Anderson 1957 documentary follows
workers around the fruit, veg & flower market, providing a poetic
‘slice of life’ snapshot of the area’s history.
The documentary features 12 hours in the life of the Covent Garden Market;
starting in Sussex, where vegetables are loaded onto a lorry to be driven
through the night to Covent Garden, to the hustle and bustle of fruit &
veg trading, to thelast female porter of the market, to late in the morning
when trade has peaked for the day and the old ladies are looking for the
cheap flowers to sell in the street.
