Paul Smith is a man whose interest in great design extends far beyond the boundaries of a well cut pair of slacks, and his Covent Garden flagship store is often used as a repository for whichever genre of good looking ephemera has recently sparked his magpie instincts. This summer, he’s showing off possibly the coolest motorcycle helmets you’ve ever seen, produced by Parisian designers Les Ateliers Ruby.

The man behind the helmets, Jerôme Coste, was inspired by a number of things – a love of Steve McQueen, a fascination with Japanese motorcycle gangs and the six different cranial injuries he’d suffered from his own high speed misadventures. Made from light but durable carbon fibre technology inherited from the aerospace industry, Coste’s helmets have a pleasingly old fashioned shape to them – like something a silk-scarved playboy with a lacquered moustache would have worn – but with the weird and wonderful designs of somebody who’s experienced a number of head traumas.

Prices start at £425, going up to £600 for the most limited edition
